Pool supplies are mostly resilient, but there are times where they are stored improperly leading to a delay of opening and a hefty expense for a replacement for the most intricate equipment. Don’t get stuck scrambling to get everything together before the next heatwave by learning to prevent any mishaps that could happen while you store your pool supplies for the off-season.
Different Pool Equipment Storage Tips
Pool Hose
- Drain residual water
- Read manufacturer’s manual on proper cleaning methods
- Take apart hose
- Keep it straight when storing so no kinks appear
Pool Vacuum
- Disconnect from the power supply
- Drain all of the water out of it and let it dry
- Reinsert filter bags or cartridges after cleaning them
- Roll up the power cord neatly to avoid kinks
- Store it upside down away from the elements
- Store it where it stays cool and doesn’t get too hot
Pool Floats and Toys
- Clean thoroughly to avoid mold and mildew
- Use a bleach-water solution in a large pool of water to let them soak
- Use a sponge for the harder to clean items
- Store in a dry area away from the elements
- Smaller toys should be held in a plastic container
Pool Filter Cartridges
- Allow the filter to drain fully
- Wipe away old lubricant from the filter near the o-ring
- Remove the paper cartridge and rinse each pleat
- Disconnect from system hoses
- Spray inside the filter to clean away any debris
- Let soak in a filter cleaner solution for the amount of time directed
- Rinse and let dry
- Store all parts in a climate-controlled area away from environmental factors
Pool Chemicals
- Understand that pool chemical storage needs to follow certain regulations
- Store in an area with noncorrosive material such as plastic or foam
- Store in dry areas away from the elements and away from gasoline or propane
- Chlorine and acid must never be stored side-by-side
- Should be stored in an area where it will not freeze
Pool Solar Covers
- Spray and brush off as much debris as you can
- Lay it out in the sun on in a clean section of yard or driveway
- Use a few drops of dish detergent and clean off remaining debris
- Rinse off the cover and repeat with others side
- Hang to dry
- Fold fan style and store it in a climate-controlled dry area
