What Baby Gear to Store
Babies have a lot of clothes, furniture, and other items associated with them. Consequently, it’s helpful to list out what you have before you store it. You may have some of the following baby items taking up space in your home:
- Bibs
- Burp cloths
- Milk storage containers
- Boxes of newborn-size diapers
- Changing pad
- Baby ointment
- Disposable wipes
- Baby clothes
- Blankets
- Crib
- Pack ‘n Play
- Play pen
- Mobile
- High Chairs
- Baby tub
- Toilet training seat
- Other items
This incomplete list can cost up to hundreds of dollars, and these essentials will need to find a place if they are not in use and require somewhere secure and climate-controlled. Selecting a less protective storage option can mean untold damage in the form of mold, warping from extreme heat or cold, water damage, or even pest infestations, so it’s important to consider your options carefully.
Tips for Storing Your Baby Gear
Baby Clothes
Baby clothes in storage can be a breeding ground for bacteria if not stored properly. For the best results, put the clothes through the wash with fragrance free soap to keep them smelling just as fresh as the day you put them in storage without attracting any pests.
The best way to organize the many different outfits for a child is to sort them by size and season, then put each category into vacuum-sealed bags. You can then place them in another storage bin to be certain dirt and dust will not get in.
Baby Toys
Baby toys can vary widely in material and cleaning needs, but giving them a good wash with soap and water should be enough to keep most items sanitary. Let them dry, store them in a garbage bag or a laundry bag, and place them in a labeled bin just like the baby clothes. Keep them away from the sun and fluctuations of temperature where they may crack. If they crack, dispose of them, as bacteria can get in and be hard to get out.
Large Baby Gear
Keeping older items such as cribs, high chairs, and car seats may be risky, as they might have been recalled or have outdated safety features. Be sure to double-check any updates on these items to be sure that they are still safe to use.
Large furniture, especially wooden models, should be kept in a climate-controlled area away from sunlight to keep them in good condition. Take apart larger items to make more room and thoroughly clean cloth pieces and baby tubs where bacteria may be present.
